BIODIVERSITY WEBQUEST

You are about to go on a quest through the internet to consolidate your learning about Biodiversity.  You will be given six tasks to complete, which will take you through different websites about Biodiversity.  Each task has a specific "theme" and has an assignment to be completed to showcase your knowledge about Biodiversity.
You will need to create a "Biodiversity Journal" to put all of your completed assignments in, this can be a scrapbook or just a simple duotang, remember creativity gives you extra credit!  You may use Tools2Go to create documents and store your work until you are ready to put your Journal together.  You will be given some time at school to do this but also you will have to do some work at home.  Please try to keep up as best as you can.

This Webquest is to be completed and handed in by December 19, 2011.

Here we go...

Task 1
To start go to http://www.amnh.org/ology/index.php?channel=biodiversity# and click the "about Biodiversity" button and read through the information.  Create a document and answer the following questions:
1.  What are the 3 kinds of Biodiversity?  Give an example of each.
2.  We get a lot of help from species and ecosystems.  Provide 3 examples from this section that you read.
3.  What is extinction?  In what ways have humans contributed to the extinction of some species? (Take a look at "Going, Going, Gone" to find more answers.)

Task 2
An Invasive Species is something that is not native and has negative effects on an ecosystem.  It is usually an organism that has been brought to one area from somewhere else.  To learn more about this topic go to:  http://www.iiseagrant.org/NabInvader/Lakes/suspects/suspects.html
What you see on this website are Invasive Species that invade the waters around us, especially the Great Lakes.  Choose 2 of these species, read the information provided and then in your Journal summarize what you have read explaining how this species has reduced biodiversity in these areas.  Include a few pictures of your species in your Journal from google images.

Task 3
Using this link Rainforest Animals scroll down to find the examples of animals in this ecosystem.  Choose 15-20 different animals and classify them into a graphic organizer.  Your classification system should be at least 3 different groups and should be something other than fish, mammals, reptiles, etc.  Use pictures as well as words to make your work more appealing.

Task 4
Click on the link How Can You Help Biodivesity?  Read about the many ways that you can help to protect biodiversity.  Which of these suggestions have you already done? Create a poster highlighting a specific issue concerning biodiversity that interests you (stopping wildlife trade, or a local issue) and include it in your Journal.

Task 5
You have learned many things about Biodiversity this term.  Using Bitstrips create a 6 panel comic focused on any topic you have learned about in this unit.  Have fun and be creative, but also showcase your learning!  When completed make sure you send to me using the "Share with Class" option.

Task 6
You are now Biodiversity experts!  Leave a comment on the blog about what you found to be the most interesting task or something new that you have learned about Biodiversity.  Maybe you want to share a website that you found in your quest or a video on youtube that is relevant to our topic.
